Nickel (Ni) is a transition element that exhibits a mixture of ferrous and nonferrous metal properties. It is both siderophile (i.e., associates with iron) and chalcophile (i.e., associates with sulfur). The bulk of the nickel mined comes from two types of ore deposits:
The NorthMet Deposit Resources & Reserves. NorthMet comprises 290 million tons of proven and probable reserves grading 0.288% copper and 0.083% nickel. It has Measured and Indicated mineral resources of 795 million tons grading 0.234% copper and 0.07% nickel and 457.7 million tons of Inferred material at 0.236% copper and 0.067% nickel.
Techniques to assess mineral resources have been developed by the USGS to support the stewardship of Federal lands and to evaluate mineral resource availability in a global context. The USGS also compiles statistics and information on the worldwide supply of, demand for, and flow of nickel.
Nickel is a silvery-white metal with a slight golden tinge that takes a high polish. It is one of only four elements that are magnetic at or near room temperature, the others being iron, cobalt and gadolinium. Its Curie temperature is 355 °C (671 °F), meaning that bulk nickel is non-magnetic above this temperature.
